N°06 The Three Rivers

In the heart of the Vaud countryside, where the Jorat plateau meets the Broye valley, this itinerary takes you on a discovery of three rivers that have shaped the geography and communication routes of the Moudon region over the centuries: the Broye, the Carrouge and the Bressonne.

Along this hike you will discover the medieval houses of the Upper Town of Moudon, the molasse cliffs overlooking the Broye River, the historic bridges of Bressonnaz, as well as the picturesque village of Seppey and its castle, former residence of the painter Eugène Burnand, before descending into the Carrouge valley, with its dense vegetation and mysterious waterfalls.

On the other side of the valley with its fertile land punctuated by beautiful Waldensian farms, you will see the hill of Bioley and its refreshing coniferous forest. 

After crossing the road to Berne, you will start the descent into the valley of the Bressonne which marks the entrance to the municipality of Hermenches. Surrounded by fields and forests, the village's main street features beautiful farms. 

You cross the Bressonne again to reach the village of Syens and its church with a gothic choir before you return to Moudon walking along the river Broye.

Point of interest

 

1.  Eglise Saint-Etienne

Noted for its splendid Gothic architecture and painted adornment, the church has 16th-century choir stalls and the oldest organ in the canton (1764). The church is a stopover point of the Via Jacobi 4 leading pilgrims to Saint James of Compostela.

2.  Cascade, ravin de la Tuayre

A magical and bucolic place, perfect to relax to the sound of the waterfall and the singing of birds in the middle of nature. You can take the opportunity to picnic and admire the molasse cliffs that surround the waterfall. Nearby, you will discover the walkways and the bridge that crosses the Carrouge.

3.  Bois de Bioley

A forest which leads to the highest point of the walk at 740 m and offers a nice view of the hills and nearby villages. In the middle of the woods is the Bioley Woods shelter, whose name means "birch", but the forest is mainly composed of conifers in the shade of which you can hike peacefully.

4.  Château de Carrouge

The castle of Carrouge is located at the top of Haute-Ville. A former seigneurial property, it is now the seat of a specialized school. Listed as a historical monument in 1905, the former Layaz defense tower is one of the key elements of the Upper Town's physiognomy. Its terrace offers a bird's eye view of the Bourg and the river Broye below.
